4th time back to Speed-this dude ain't happy

One thing thing that isn't discussed enough, is belt deflection. It is probably the biggest killer of belts aside from just burning it via slippage. Deflection happens in two forms. One is from improperly aligned clutches (self explanatory) , and the other is due to torque. The torque can be so great as to cause the crankshaft (aka primary clutch shaft stub) to bend as well as the secondary clutch shaft, thus pulling the two towards each other causing the belt to bend as it rotates. That causes a lot of heat due to friction (think of bending metal enough till it breaks) which leads to the belt letting go.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I felt that the information might help some understand the real benefit and purpose of double shearing the clutches.

Spot on! (y) IMO, I think having both the primary and secondary clutches in double shear was a smart design decision by Speed.

GH: unless they just got through taking the belt out of the fridge and put it on the car, I don't see how a belt can be 40 degrees when the ambient air temp is over 100. So my guess is, the belt temp sensor or indicator was not functioning properly. I do recall seeing erroneous belt temp readings at one point (many months ago during testing), but I haven't heard of that issue happening since then.
Was it 'C' or 'F' ?

It is conceivable that the dash was reading 40 degrees C (which would be 104 degrees F) while the ambient air temp of 100 degrees was verbally being reported in F in the vid. Thanks PropDr for mentioning the possibility of that. (y)
That what triggered my question, 100F and 40C almost equal out. (100/38)

After the numerous weekly design presentation regarding the clutch and the shafts in double shear being supported by the cover, I'm a bit amazed there isn't more push back from current car owners (I realize there aren't very many current car owners) if they are being told by RG to run in the dunes with the cover off - or maybe we just don't hear the push back. I love to dune and asked TR multiple times if the external fan (which was used in the past) was going to be needed and his response was always "You won't need it. You may have to make a simple adjustment to the clutch, but we'll give you all those settings" Now the solution is to run without a clutch cover and I agree with the other posts stating that is really not a solution nor is it something I will do. I'm really excited to get my car, but it's kind of hard to believe that is their solution. #471

I believe their belt cooling improvements happened after that recommendation. There should be no need to run without a clutch cover.

I believe you are right. The recommendation was before there glamis trip in July to test e85 and test whatever they did to the clutch or clutch housing.

I know I should let this one die….but how could a belt be 40c if the ambient is 110f and he was running E85 300 HP making multiple runs up Olds. IF that is real they have corrected any problem.

I don’t know what video showed that but the videos I was watching in glamis during the summer the belt temp was showing 209 to219 on e 85 and running up olds when the outside temp was 114
