Would love to hear folks opinions on these 2 options. I’d like to be able to use a gps to race in smaller local races (D38, maybe Record), and have longer multi day trips in Baja and the States.
Anyone have suggestions one way or the other? Obviously the iPad/LeadNav option would be significantly cheaper, but not if I’m burning thru iPads because they overheat or break.

I’ve used Lowrance and IPad/LeadNav in race conditions.
1. The Lowrance is absolutely tried and true to be reliable 99.9% of the time. I had a few failures but was able to get it going at the next pit. My co-dawg is an absolute expert at this and I trust him.
2. The IPad/LeadNav is impressive with the satellite perspective of earth s it’s back drop and clarity of the trail is amazing. However, it’s slow and it can take a few seconds to catch up. The delay can be critical if you don’t have an experience co-dawg the knows the delay and how to work it.

I placed both in the race car, the IPad as primary and Lowrance as back up. Both had prerun notes and files loaded. I found the IPad was slow in very remote location and canyons, like the crossover road from Loreto to Insurentes in Baja at a speed of 60 MPH in a 5/16. Can you imagine the delay in a TT at 100 plus mph, scary.

Conclusion: I may try the new Garmin, one in the Speed UTV and one in the my chase truck. I like the idea of the chase truck and car being able to see each other’s location on the screen.
My chase truck also has an IPad, the cigarette light charger can’t charge fast enough when the IPad is on for two straight days while chasing down the Baja peninsula.

I fly with an iPad as secondary navigation and for flight planning (airplanes). The cost of an iPad is fairly low, just make sure you get the version with the cellular GPS chip (not all of them have this ability). The cases meant for aviation solve some of the overheating issues you may run into, as they normally have a gap between the iPad and case. Take a look at Pivot iPad cases.

Don’t fly much anymore, but I use the pivot in my manx with OnX off road. Currently just using a ram mount until I get the Diablo then I’m gonna try to figure out something for using it on that .53840983-0719-4CEE-8750-71E601398A5C.jpeg
